Watching

My girls have taken to setting up many 'tea' parties at their little round table in their playroom. We recently moved almost all of their toys and things into the front room, which had served as office and craft supply room. They're now directly between the living room and kitchen. It's now mainly their space and they've never played with their things more. Children want to be were everyone else is. Close to where mama works and cooks, not tucked away in their bedroom.

The sacrifice of space is well worth it to be able to watch them play and imitate so near me. And what could make a house a home more than the bright and joyful spaces of children?

I couldn't agree more! Makes for less room indeed but mine have always played around me too. Only now at 4.5 does Audrey sometimes play in her room. Usually because she needs quiet time from the baby.

It's the same for my girls... they go in there to get away from each other. :)

i agree with this so much. my daughter has a large play area in the living room (which is open to the dining room and kitchen), and i couldn't imagine making her play anywhere else. i know that not everyone likes to have shared spaces with children, but i think that children deserve to have their things integrated into the heart of the household just as much as anyone else. i'm glad that your girls are enjoying their new play space!

I so agree, Meredith! I mean, children live here! No need to hide their things away. :)

I rarely played in my room as a kid, I was forever dragging my toys into the living room. Now my kids do the same -- their toy kitchen is IN my kitchen so if I'm cooking something they can't actually help with, they can play-cook if the want. When I'm folding laundry upstairs, they do play in their bedrooms... and their bathroom, my bedroom, my bathroom... I love having them be around me, and I think for my 2-year-old it's safer too.

What is it about a round table that makes tea parties so much better?
