Some New Things

I've been working on a couple of new things for my shop. Actually the first thing, this balm, was something I made for my girls.

I had put together a 'Calm Down' basket for them.... a mind jar, Rescue Remedy, and soothing stones. I found it very helpful, if for no other reason than the intentionality behind it, but I wanted to add something that I could apply to them, a salve or oil. What I came up with was 'Calming Balm', full of skin nourishing oils and soul soothing essential oils. Lavender, a favorite 'all-purpose' oil and chamomile.
The way I use it is, we go into a quiet room and lie down. Then I rub the balm along their forehead, over the nose and chin, all the while softly singing or talking with them. It works wonders! The calming scent, the gentle touch and soft voices, my being there with them.
Now it's our go-to balm. River is wearing underwear during the day but still a diaper at night. Poor thing suffers from diaper rash much more than my other girls and the calming balm is the only thing helping right now. And I can feel good about it because it's totally safe and gentle. We also use it for dry spots, itchy spots, dry lips.... anything!

I've made up just a few.. I think I have a dozen right now, and put them in my shop, just to see how they do. Right now I've handwritten the labels. We'll see about nice printed labels if I decide to make more to sell.

I must admit, I've temporarily abandoned my knitting. I'm finding more peace in very simple stitching at the moment. I like these. They're wool felt, filled with dried lavender buds and rice.

I also wanted to tell you about a giveaway I'm doing over on the Natural Kids blog for Mother's Day. And a sale from my friend Lucinda. 12% off in her shop right now. You should absolutely take advantage of it. My girls just adore her toys we have! Just use the coupon code MADAY12 at checkout.

Well, that's all for now. It's way past my bedtime!

Oh your new products are wonderful. I love the idea of a mom made salve for her little ones. Also the calming hearts are so sweet.
I'm totally snurching the tin of calming balm you gave my mom! The one you gave me has been used a lot already, and it really does help! I rub my thumbs in it and then massage my kids' temples and the insides of their wrists with the balm while soothingly reminding them that if they keep running around like hooligans, someone's going to get hurt... ;-)
So much calm loveliness at your home! :o)

Lovely and reassuring. Best to you.
So sweet- I love the idea! I will check your shop for sure. Haven't yet, but hoping you list ingredients as I have a tree nut allergy and have to be careful with almond oil. So many natural products don't list specifics so I can't use them just in case... Or maybe you can email me to let me know? :)

HI Lenka,
My oldest also has nut allergies so we steer clear of them. I've included shea butter, which is technically a tree nut but here's what's said about it.

Q My daughter has an extreme allergy to tree nuts, and now there are so many soaps and lotions out there with shea nuts or shea nut butter or oil. I have never heard of this “nut” before. Is it a true nut? If it is, am I right to assume that my daughter should avoid the many products that contain it?

A Dr. Watson: Interestingly, the shea fruit is similar in appearance to avocado. The shea tree grows in the Sahel region of West Africa. As an aside, the harvesting and processing of shea is primarily an activity of rural women (300,000 to 400,000 in Burkina Faso alone). The fruity part of the nut, when crushed, yields a vegetable oil that is used, not only in cooking, but also in soap-making and skincare and hair-care products. This is what you have seen in products.

With regard to your question as to whether or not this is a true nut, the Food Allergy Research and Resource Program reports the shea nuts are a tree nut, but that they do not belong in the list of commonly allergenic tree nuts. There are no reports of allergic reactions to shea nuts or its products. For soaps and cosmetics, it is the oil from the shea nut that is used. The oil contains little protein, which is what triggers the allergic reaction. As with everything, if you are worried or doubtful, avoid the product. I am sure there will be further information with regard to this product in the future.

My daughter uses shea butter with no problem at all. Perhaps you already know how you reaact to it... ?
Here's the ingredients;
shea butter
grape seed oil
beeswax
vitamin e oil
lavender essential oil
chamomile essential oil

Hope this helps!
